One of the most economical ways to travel to and from Detroit is by train. The most extensive service offered starting in Detroit is on Amtrak, home of the bustling Amtrak Station Detroit, over on West Baltimore Street.

Built in 1988 to handle service, The current Amtrak Station Detroit was designed to replace Michigan Central Station, which was considered too expensive and not centrally located enough. A number of trains roll through the station on a daily basis, most on the Wolverine route through the heart of America.

Travelers departing from and arriving at the station can take advantage of the free short-term only parking, as well as the enclosed waiting area to avoid the weather. The waiting area is especially helpful if you're traveling during the colder months. Both restrooms and pay phones are available to passengers during station hours.

The Amtrak Station Detroit also has a ticket office, meaning you don't have to buy ahead online. The ticket office is open every day of the week the following hours: six until noon, one until 2:30, four until eight, and nine until midnight. The station itself is open from midnight until one in the morning and from six until midnight every day of the week. Passengers also have access to Quik-Trak ticketing machines during station hours.
