Located in the heart of Mississippi cotton country, the Greenwood Amtrak Station stands testament to the importance of the railroads in the transportation of cotton and other goods from the rural south to the rest of the world. While many freight trains pass through carrying cotton, and food that is packaged in this town, which is also the administrative headquarters of Leflore County and all the edge of the Yazoo River, it is also a stop on the New Orleans line. This line travels the 900 miles between Chicago and New Orleans in 19 hours.

As to be expected in a small town with a population of less than 20,000 souls, the station does not offer ticketing and is open only from 8:30am to 9:30pm and 7pm to 8pm. There are no amenities in the station beyond a payphone, and restroom. Nearby hotels include the Ramada Greenwood, the Econo Lodge Inn & Suites and the Hampton Inn Greenwood.
