The Ancient Agora of Athens was once the center of all political, commercial, administrative, religious and cultural activities in Athens during the ancient times. Today, it is one of the most popular sites visited by tourists visiting this bustling capital of Greece.

The agora was discovered during excavations campaigns made by the Greek Archaeological Society from 1859 to 1912. The Ancient Agora of Athens had originally been a residential community. In the 6th century BC, the agora was reorganized by Peisistratus and transformed the agora into a commercial complex and the seat of Athenian government. Over the next few years, he had replaced the private residences with court houses, new buildings and temples dedicated to the gods Zeus, Apollo and Hephaestus.

Today, tourists can visit the ruins of the different buildings and houses that once comprised this magnificent center. There are a number of guided tours that can be arranged and booked in advance. The best time to visit the Ancient Agora of Athens is during the first Sunday of every month since during this time, admissions fees are waived.
