Erfurt, which is 100km from Leipzig, 150km from Nürnberg and 180km from Hannover, is the capital city of Thuringia, in Germany.

Despite being the fifth smallest by population (2.3million) of Germany's sixteen states, Thuringia has seen and experienced many famous faces, such as Martin Luther, who attended the University of Erfurt where he received both his bachelor's and master's degrees of theology in the 15th century.

It is also the birthplace of Johann Bernhard Bach, who was a German composer, and Johann Sebastian Bach's father, Johann Ambrosius Bach. The sociologist Max Weber was also born in the city of Erfurt.

Even though Erfurt may be within a small state, it has still made a cultural impact. One museum that is situated in Erfurt is the Angermuseum. The Angermuseum is an art museum of the city of Erfurt.

First opened as an artistic heritage in 1886, by the son of Frederick von Nerly, who was a German painter, the Angermuseum was an art gallery that soon expanded its collection of paintings. In 1912, two German art historians took the museum over; Edwin Redslob and Walter Kaesbach.

The Angermuseum contains a large collection of medieval art from Erfurt and Thuringia as well as international importance; such as the Augustinian altar, the Madonna and the deer Rebenstock Madonna.

Visitors will see paintings from famous artists such as Karl Buchholz, Paul Baum and Christian Rohlf. In addition landscape paintings of 19th century painters include Joesph Anton Koch, Caspar David Friedrich, Carl Rottmann and Carl Schuch to name a few.

On display will also be the only surviving monumental wall paintings of the German Expressionists that were defended by the head of the museum from destruction by the Nazi's.

Despite that fact that Erfurt is a small town, there is still plenty of opportunity to find a hotel close by. Prices vary, but are affordable between $84 - $130 per night.

Openings times to the museum are Tuesday - Sunday from 10am - 13:00 and 14:00 - 18:00. Mondays are closed.

Renovations are currently being undertaken at the Angermuseum and will be closed until June 2010.
