Anitkabir

Situated in Turkey's capital Ankara, is the Anitkabir. This monumental mausoleum is the final resting place of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who was the leader of the Turkish War of Independence. He was also the father of Turks, founder of modern Turkey and first president of the Republic of Turkey.

Architects Professor Emin Onat and Assistant Professor Orhan Arda, designed the winning proposal after it won a competition by the Turkish Government to design a mausoleum for Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Work began in 1944 and was completed in 1953. In 2007 alone, over 11 million visitors visited Anitkabir.

The Anitkabir Mausoleum sits on the top of Anittepe hill, which visitors will see dominates the city. Made of marble and combined with a mix of ancient and modern architectural styles, as well as lined with 24 stone Hittite lions, the mausoleum is a phenomenal sight to see.

The museum is comprised of three sections. In the first section of the Atatürk Museum are exhibits of the civil and official clothing that Atatürk wore, his personal belongings, various gifts as well as documents and photos.

In the second section visitors can witness the Çanakkale (Dardanelle) War. Experience the audiovisual and objects which include rocks, cannons, rifles, guns and shells, which illustrate war scenes in a three dimensional effect. You can also experience the Sakarya Meydan Savasi and Büyük Taarruz, two important battles of the War of Independence.

The third and final section is composed of events that took place starting from the War of Independence in 1919 until Atatürk's death in 1938.

Opening times to the mausoleum are Tuesday to Sunday from 9am - 17:00. Mondays are closed. Entrance is free.

However, make sure you have a hotel to stay at before arriving. Ankara is Turkey's second largest city after Istanbul and as a result is a popular retreat for many tourists. Make sure then that before flying out to witness one of the world's delights, to book a hotel. Online bookings can vary between $130 to $290 per night.
