The Ankara Citadel is perhaps the most popular destination for many locals visiting the country of Turkey. In fact, locals have considered the Ankara Citadel to be the symbol of the capital city of Ankara. It has been depicted in the local currency until 1989.

Known locally as Ankara Kalesi, the Ankara Citadel was constructed during the time when the Hittites ruled this region to serve as a garrison for protection of the city of Ankara. Expansion on the citadel began during the time of the Galatians and continued on until the time of the Byzantine Empire.

The citadel is comprised of two sections. The outer castle is made out of marble and red Ankara stone. Although there are a total of twenty different observation towers on the outer castle, only a few of these are still open to the public.

Much of the tourist attractions are seen in the inner castle. The streets of the inner castle are lined with traditional houses that serve as magnificent examples of ancient Turkish architecture. There are also a number of different Turkish baths as well as different restaurants that offer traditional and rustic Turkish cuisines, and gift shops where many of the owners continue to create crafts in the same manner that they have done for centuries.

Tourists can choose from a number of different hostels, apartments, and hotel rooms to stay in while visiting the city of Ankara. Hotel accommodations here are extremely cheap, with room rates starting at $30 per night. Many of these hotels offer a number of facilities such as wireless internet, business center facilities, currency exchange, and parking facilities.
