Antwerp Zoo is situated in Antwerp, Belgium. Founded July 21, 1843, it is the oldest animal park in the country. The park attracts about 1.3 million visitors each year. More than 100 million people have visited Antwerp Zoo. Part of the proceeds goes to research and conservation.
It is very easy to reach Antwerp Zoo due to a convenient location next to the city's Central Station.
Since its inception, the park has been controlled by the Royal Zoological Society of Antwerp. It was originally established to encourage the zoological and botanical sciences. Its first director was the scientist Jacques Kets (1785 to 1865). The building containing the natural history collections was opened in 1844.
Zoo promotes conservation by conducting educational and entertaining exhibitions on different themes and cultural.
The park, which had its beginnings to a height of less than 2 acres, currently has an area of 10 hectares. It is expected that the park be expanded by about 10% from its current size. There are many buildings built since its creation such as the Egyptian Temple (1856) and the building of Moorish style antelopes (1861).
The zoo houses over 5000 animals from 5 to about 950 different species from around the world. Each year, these animals consume 41 tons of fish, 52 tons of meat, 37 tons of potatoes, 36 tons of carrots, 128 tons of hay, 4 000 liters of milk, 23 000 eggs, 10 000 loaves.
As for the entrance fees groups of 15 people in the zoo have an advantage. Tourist can enjoy group discount on the ticket, a nice tour, an exclusive visit behind the scenes or combine visit with another Antwerp attraction. A guided tour costs 40 Euros.
