ANZAC Parade

Hotels near ANZAC Parade, Canberra, Australia .

ANZAC Parade is a significant road paved with red gravel – thought to symbolize blood. It was created and named after the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps which served – and shed blood – during World War 1. The street is used for important ceremonial occasions.

The parade is filled with symbolism and major military memorials. The memorials include The Desert Mounted Corps Memorial, Australian Service Nurses National Memorial, and The Rats of Tobruk Memorial.

Because of the parade being dedicated to soldiers of the two countries, each country has its own “basket” which is actually an arch with weaved patterns, just like a basket’s handle and signify the interwoven cultures, land, and people of the two countries. Also, the basket handles show how the two countries helped each other achieve their common goals both in peace and in war. Moreover, the handles also symbolize the sacrifice that each of the military personnel laid for their respective countries. Adding to the symbolism, the parade is flanked by trees from both countries – Hebe from New Zealand and Blue Gums from Australia.

The ANZAC Parade has its own day – April 25 – chosen to coincide with the first landing of the joint forces. Those who want to join or watch the festivities are advised to use public transportation in going to the venue as most of the adjacent roads are closed and parking spaces are not available.
