Apenheul (German for 'pet monkey') is a medium-sized zoo in Apeldoorn in the Netherlands. As the name suggests, it specializes in primates.
Apenheul Primate Park has a revolutionary concept. Monkeys are allowed to walk and move with the visitors.
Tourists can reach the park by train to Amersfoort/Enschede. Leaves every 30 minutes. Duration of journey is about 1 hour 15 minutes. Bus 2 or 6 (15 minutes) from Apeldoorn CS are also available.
It was founded in 1971, and began with only a few species of monkeys. Now, Spenheul Primate Park gathers over 30 different species. The animals are housed without bars, bonobos and gorillas live in the many-headed groups of their own islands, smaller species such as Ring-tailed lemur, squirrel monkeys and Barbary macaques live in walk-in facilities, where the visitors come close to the animals. New is a modern facility with a generous Orangutans Climbing out of ropes and wooden beams.
The attitude of the animals is considered a model; many other zoos have later adopted elements from Apenheul, such as the keeping of primates on islands separated by wide moats. In a small amphitheater, several times a day gorillas are fed; this show is entertaining, but their focus is providing information about the animals.
The park offers a restaurant, Luiaard, a souvenir shop and a jungle playground.
The zoo is popular for families with children, the admission fee (17.50 euro for adults, 14.00 Euro for children) is deliberately high to ensure the zoo's ability to continue its research and conservation programs.
One can visit the park in 2009 from April 1st until November 1st, daily from 9:30 am until 5 pm. In July and August Apenheul is open daily from 9:30 am until 6:00 pm. The open hours for weekends of May, June and September from 9:30 am until 6:00 pm. Apenheul is closed during winter month.
