Construction on the Varna Aquarium was initiated by Prince Ferdinand I on January 6, 1906 and was completed by years later. The outbreak of the Balkan Wars in 1912 caused the delay of the Varna Aquarium to the public. This, plus other political events led to the opening of the Varna Aquarium to the public only in the year 1932. What is interesting to know is that prior to the Varna Aquarium being opened to the public, the building served as a refugee camp, a base for army units, a School for Mechanics and School of Fishing.
