The Aquarium of Genoa is the largest aquarium in Italian and the second in Europe after the one in Valencia, Spain.
It was built in 1992 for Expo 92, by two architects Renzo Piano and Peter Chermayef and today serves as a cultural, educational and scientific center, being located in the middle of Genoa. Annually, 1.2 million people visit the aquarium. The Aquarium of Genoa looks, from the outside, like bunch of freight containers lined up on top of a ship.
The place is accessible from Genoa Principe railway station, from the metro stop "San Giorgio" and from the motorway exit Genova Ovest.
To see the whole aquarium takes 2 hours and 30 minutes. Within the 71 tanks and 4 million liters of water, there are 600 species of animals and plants. The fish that are there are all different in their own way. Some of the big animal attractions are: Penguins, Sharks, and Seals. Aquarium of Genoa is also a home for many reptiles. It is well known that Aquarium tries to reconstruct the natural environments of the individual species.
The facilities offered are plenty starting from bathroom with baby changing, cloakroom where clothing, place for luggage and crash helmets, for free. One can also borrow child backpack carriers. In the Aquarium area, there is s snack bar and many hot and cold drinks machines.
