Arafat, or Mount Arafat, refers to a granite hill located east of Mecca. Arafat is also known by the name Mount of Mercy. This is the hill where Muslims believe Muhammad, the Islamic prophet, delivered the Farewell Solomon to the Muslims who accompanied him for the Hajj towards the end of his life. Arafat reaches approximately 70 meters in height.

There is a level area surrounding the Hill and is called the Plain of Arafat. On the ninth day of the Hajj, it is here where Muslims spend the afternoon. When pilgrims fail to be present in the plain of Arafat, the pilgrimage is invalidated. Many pilgrims stay in the plain of Arafat all night in vigil. After spending the day or night at Arafat in the state of Ihram, pilgrims will then proceed to Muzdalifah, also as part of the Hajj.

The 9th day spent at Arafat is known as the Day of Arafat and serves as the culminating event of the Hajj.
