Situated in South Shields in England, is Arbeia. Once a large Roman fort it housed a garrison and once guarded the river Tyne. Founded around AD160, the fort stands overlooking the River Tyne, in Tyne and Wear and once played an important role in the mighty frontier system.

Based four miles east of the end of Hadrian's Wall - a stone fortification that was built by the Roman Empire across the width of what is now known as Northern England - the fort was once the maritime supply base for the 17 Forts along the Wall.

However, even though the fort now stands ruined, stunning reconstructions of the original building as well as finds at the extensively evacuated site provide a unique insight into life in Roman Britain. So much so, that Arbeia is the only Fort where visitors can witness archaeologists at work.

The West Gate of the Fort was reconstructed in 1986 which enabled visitors to understand the size and scale of Roman military architecture. Two further reconstructions were undertaken in 2002 which showed the different living conditions of a normal solider, a Centurion and a Commanding Officer.

Arbeia which means 'fort of the Arab troops', could be a reference to the fact that part of Arbeia's garrison at one time was a squadron of Syrian boatmen who were from the Tigris. A squadron of Spanish cavalry who were also stationed there are known as the First Asturian.

The museum provides a look at the weapons, armour, jewellery and coins, while also providing a glimpse as to how the Romans buried their dead. Original Roman tombstones, inscribed altars and human remains are also available to see at Arbeia.
