Archaeological Park of Neapolis

Hotels near Archaeological Park of Neapolis, Siracusa, Italy .

Situated in southern Italy is a historic city called Siracusa. Over 2,700 years old, the city is famous for its culture, rich Greek history, amphitheatres, architecture and its association to Archimedes, who was a Greek mathematician, physicist, engineer, inventor and astronomer.

Situated in the south-east corner of the island of Sicily, the city of Siracusa played an important role in ancient times and was one of the top powers of the Mediterranean world.

When Siracusa was founded in 734BC by Greek settlers from Corinth and Tenea, it was called Sirako. However, as Siracusa grew Neopolis became the new part of town that was created by the Greeks, and in 212AD when Rome took over, it was for many centuries a prosperous Mediterranean city.

Nowadays Siracusa attracts millions of visitors to witness the fine archaeological and historical sights in the Neopolis Archaeological Park, located on Terminite Hill. The park bears witness to the solid evidence of both the Greek and Roman influence that was part of this grand Sicilian town.

Journey through the park and marvel at the monuments within its limits. Witness the Greek Theatre that was cut directly into the rock, which is still considered one of the largest and finest of its kind today that is still in use. Walk up above the Greek theatre to a low cliff, where you will find several caves cut into it, including a nyphaeum, where statues once surrounded the water feature.

To the east of the Greek theatre is a deep quarry called the Latomia del Paradiso (Paradise Quarry). A peaceful spot to include in your tour, here you will find it full of vegetation and lemon trees. There is also a cave called the Ear of Dionysius (Orecchio de Dionisio). The reason it is called this is because Dionysius who was the ruler of Ancient Syracuse used to eavesdrop on prisoners all thanks to the cave's acoustics.

A second cave is also nearby, by the name of Grotta dei Cordari, or the Rope Makers cave which was used by the ropemakers.

As you continue along the archaeological park, following Via Romagnoli around, you will also discover burial niches cut into the rock. It is also supposed that this is the burial place of Archimedes. One landmark, that often times gets overlooked is the Roman Amphitheatre. This evocative spot is overgrown and covered in flowers, and seems to be the forgotten theatre when compared to the Greek theatre. However the beauty of the theatre can not be hidden easily.

Hotels reasonably priced around the historical city of Siracusa and can vary from anywhere between $74 a night for a three star hotel to $150 a night for a four star hotel.
