Archeon

Hotels near Archeon, Leiden, Netherlands .

Archeon is a museum park situated in the Netherlands just 30 minutes from Amsterdam airport. From Amsterdam take the A4 highway and then follow the signs to Utrecht.
When it was opened in 1994, the park was intended as an archaeological research station, which would be financed from visitor proceeds, but this turned out to be too optimistic. Between 1994- 1997 Archeon was closed for lack of money.
The park was reopened on a smaller scale in 1997. It still has a lot of reconstructions of buildings that once dominated the cities in the Netherlands. A small temple that was excavated at Ceuclum/Cuijk and The Roman Bridge, which used to be the entrance of the park, still exists and are the main attractions.
Inside Archeon there are 43 buildings representing three different periods of history: Prehistory, the Roman Period and the Middle Ages. All 43 constructions represent bridges, inns, cabins, temples, monasteries, farms and guild houses that give visitors an insight into daily life centuries ago. The most interesting feature of Archeon is that all buildings are full-size and faithfully reconstructed based on archaeological finds.
