Built in the middle of the 18th century to channel fresh water to Rio de Janeiro from the Carioca River, the Arcos da Lapa, or Carioca Acqueduct, is an architectural attraction in the Lapa neighborhood in the center of Rio. The aqueduct was necessary due to the fact that the center of Rio was originally surrounded by swampland with poor water quality, meaning that potable water had to be accessed by way of streams a great distance from the city.

An especially notable portion of the Arcos da Lapa, as it is called by locals, and the portion for which it is famous, is the distance connecting the hills of Santa Theresa and Santo Antonio. Between these hills, the aqueduct includes two sets of arches, one built upon the other, spanning 885 feet, almost 60 feet in the air. Since 1896, this portion of the Carioca Acqueduct has served as a bridge for the Bondinho de Santa Teresa tramway.

The Arcos da Lapa is located at R. Lelio Gama – Centro, in the Lapa neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro. The aqueduct is within easy walking distance of Praca Floriano, the National Museum of Fine Arts, and the Teatro Rival Brazil.
