Arigna Mining Experience

Hotels near Arigna Mining Experience, Carrick-on-Shannon, Ireland .

Arigna Mining Experience is located in the breathtaking valley of Carrick-on-Shannon on the County Roscommon border in Ireland. For 400 years, mining was carried out in Arigna until the last mines were closed in 1990. Mining has been a long standing tradition within the Arigna area and dates back to the1600's when Charles Coote established iron works at Crevelea and Arigna. Charcoal made from local timber was used in the smelting process. However, as local timber supplies declined a new source of fuel was required. This was when coal was first discovered and as a result in 1788, the O'Reilly brothers established an iron foundry where coal, for the first time in Ireland, was used in the smelting process. However, when iron mining turned out be unsuccessful, coal mining flourished and continued to provide employment in Arigna, especially when other parts of Ireland were in poverty. The Arigna Mining Experience enables you to experience the hazardous working conditions that were harsh and cramped. Tours are undertaken by ex-miners who provide comprehensive insight into what used to be their working way of life. Tours last for 45 minutes and in that time, visitors will see what it was like to work in some of the narrowest coal seams in the western world. They will also see methods demonstrated that were used to extract the coal. During the tour, visitors will learn about the origin and the history of the Arigna coal mines through a photo gallery and displays. Visitors can also walk around the museum to see the exhibitions, where local geology and the formation of coal deposits are explained. Nearby hotels and guest houses offer quaint accommodation where visitors can enjoy the breathtaking views in a scenic location of Ireland while discovering the rich history of the coal miners. Opening times are 7 days a week from 10am - 17:00. Admissions: Adults €10.00; Students €8.00; Child €6.00 http://www.arignaminingexperience.ie/index.htm
