The Arizona State Capitol is located in Phoenix, Arizona. Though it once housed both territorial and state legislatures, it is now maintained as the Arizona Capitol Museum.

The building itself has quite an interesting history, as it was created as part of an effort to demonstrate the Arizona Territory’s preparedness for statehood. The building opened in 1901 after a design competition won by James Riely Gordon. Made from materials indigenous to Arizona, the building is topped with a wind vane similar to the Winged Victoria of Samothrace.

The exhibits at the Arizona Capitol Museum represent Arizona’s history and culture. Exhibits include Arizona state symbols, important figures, the USS Arizona and natural history. Admission to the museum is free, and its hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Visitors should check out www.lib.az.us/museum/ before attending.
