Arlington National Cemetery is one of the most sacred places on United States soil. Located in Arlington County, Virginia, across the Potomac from Washington, D.C. The grounds originally belonged to the wife of Confederate general Robert E. Lee?s wife Mary Anna Lee (nee Custis), herself a descendant of Martha Washington. After the Civil War, with Lee having gone with Virginia after the state?s decision to secede from the Union, the property was in effect confiscated and turned over the federal government.

Former Presidents William Howard Taft and John F. Kennedy are buried at Arlington National Cemetery, along with Navy veteran Robert Kennedy and JFK?s wife Jacqueline. Actor Lee Marvin and writer Dashiell Hammett are two war veterans who had careers in the arts and are also buried at Arlington. Among a number of memorials and annual ceremonies which take place at Arlington, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is one of the most visited. Over 4 million people visit Arlington National Cemetery every year. Visiting hours are from 8 am to 7 pm from April 1 to September 30. In the winter (October 1 to March 31), visiting hours end at 5 pm. Public transportation is available by subway trains. There are extensive parking options as well.
