Armacao Beach aka Praia da Armacao is one of the many beaches in the Buzios area. Armacao is so named for whale traps employed by Brazilian fishermen. The word armacao stems from the Middle English armes, which means weapons. In the late 1700 whales were almost hunted to extinction in the area; whaling has since been banned. Armacao still has a strong fishing heritage, and you can see dozens of colorful fishing boats coming in with the day’s catch. Notably, there are two bronze statues on the beach, one of them is of the French star Brigitte Bardot and the other pays homage to the local fishermen. Nearby is a small, but bustling beach town with restaurants and smaller guesthouses.
