Arsenal Hill

So named because of its use as a weapons arsenal during the Civil War, Arsenal Hill was also one of the first residential neighborhoods in Columbia. Besides being home to the Governorís Mansion, Arsenal Hill is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in town.

The neighborhood is the former site of The Arsenal, the sister school to South Carolinaís military academy The Citadel. During the Civil War, Shermanís deadly march burned every building to the ground, leaving only the Governorís Mansion at 800 Richland, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. Nearby Finlay Park is Columbiaís largest public park. Founded in 1991, there are fourteen acres of land and an impressive waterfall which leads into the park lake below.
