Once the Nova Scotia Museum of Fine Arts, which acquired the Crown’s 200 piece art collection in 1908, the museum officially changed its name in 1975 to the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. The Dominion Building (ca. 1867), the current permanent home of the gallery, became just that in 1988. Although a number of traveling exhibits show throughout the year, the Art Gallery is based its strong permanent collection- just some of the highlights of which are Boy in a Ret Hat (1932) Stanley Royle, and British Vessels at Anchor in Annapolis Royal (1751) Samuel Scott. Education is a priority for the Gallery, and many community programs are run through them, like Resiliency & Youth, Grow with Art and Autism Arts. Tours are given daily at 2:30pm daily, and again at 7pm on Thursdays. The museum is open from 10am-5pm daily, and until 9pm on Thursdays. Adult admissions cost $10, seniors $8, students $5, youth (6-17) $3, children 5 and under enter free, and a special family rate allows 2 adults and 3 youths to enter for $20.

After a visit to the gallery, guests can browse for handcrafts to take home in the Gallery Shop, which has unique pieces from artisans and artists from around the region.
