The Art Institute of Chicago, located at 111 South Michigan Avenue, was created in the Beaux-Arts style by Shepley, Rutan, and Coolidge of Boston, for the 1893 World's Columbian Exhibition. Two bronze lions adorn the well-known western entrance, and are dressed up festively whenever one of Chicago's sports teams makes the playoffs. The ground floor houses the Ryerson and Burnham Libraries, which cover many art periods, with a heavy focus on 18th-20th century architeture. 2009 saw a large expansion with a bridgeway and a terrace overlooking the park.

Famous artworks housed at the Art Institute include pieces by Edouard Manet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Vincent Van Gogh. The Terra Collection (on extended loan from the Terra Foundation) can be viewed here, as well as the works of students at the Art School.

Visitors can tour the collections between the opening hours of Monday-Wednesday (10:30-5:30), Thursday (10:30-8, free admission from 5-8), Friday from 10:30-5, and weekends from 10-5. Admission is $18 for adults, $12 for students and seniors, and children under 14 and members are free.
