Since its founding in 1971 by artists Philip Trachtman, the Art Institute of Philadelphia has grown into a private college with a student body of nearly 4,000 students. Located in the heart of downtown Philadelphia, students may choose from degree-granting programs accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools in advertising, audio production, culinary management, digital filmmaking & video production, fashion design, fashion marketing, graphic design, industrial design technology, interior design, media arts & animation, photography, visual effects & motion graphics and web design & interactive media. In 1979 the Art Institute was acquired by the Education Management Corporation, and moved to 1622 Chestnut Street, a designated historical site and Art Deco building in 1982. Today the Institute occupies facilities in several downtown Philadelphia locations. The Art Institute of Philadelphia prides itself on providing students with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment to encourage hands-on, real-world educational experiences.
