Art Museum of the Americas is a product of the OAS Permanent Council, which established the museum in 1976 to promote the awareness and appreciation of art from all the member countries, with special emphasis on works from Latin America and the Caribbean.

Located in a 1912 building designed by Paul Cret for the OAS Secretaries General, the museum has been collecting works in its permanent collection since 1949, when Brazilian artist Candido Portinari donated the first painting to the AMA. Today, the permanent collection includes over 2,000 works of art, from paintings, sculptures and drawings to photographs, installations and prints. The impressive archives are available when making an appointment. The museum often holds workshops and gallery openings with the artist present.

Located at 201 18th Street NW, close to the National Mall, the museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed Mondays, Good Friday and all federal holidays.
