The Arthur M Sackler Gallery is part of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art, along with the Freer Gallery of Art. The gallery was established in 1987 to house the generous endowment (over 1,000 works) by Sackler, a New York physician and publisher who passed away in 1987. Sackler’s extensive collection featured a number of Chinese bronze and jade statues, Southeast Asian sculpture, Near Eastern ceramics and Chinese paintings. He topped it off with a $4 million donation to get the gallery built. Since then, works added to the collection have included Islamic book arts from as early as the 11th century, Japanese and Korean paintings, Chinese ceramics, Indian village arts and more. The Eugene & Agnes Meyer Auditorium serves both the Sackler Gallery and the Freer Gallery as a space for events, musical performances and receptions.

The museum is located at 1050 Independence Avenue SW, on the National Mall, the area connecting the Capitol and the Washington Monument. It is open every day of the year other than Christmas Day, between the hours of 10 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. There is no admission charge.

Accommodations in the area include the State Plaza Hotel (2117 E St NW), the historic Willard Intercontinental (1401 Pennsylvania Ave NW), the W Wash D.C.
