The Aspen Mountain Ski area, located just outside and above the city which bears the same name, is a hot destination for cool winter sports. Not only that, but visitors come year-round to experience and partake in the splendid wilderness of this idyllic area. The ski area got its start in 1946 as the first Aspen ski area, through the vision and drive of one Walter Paepcke. It is located in what is known as the White River National Forest, and has ski areas suitable for the varied needs and desires of beginners to the most experienced skier. The Silver Queen Gondola Lift is one of two lifts which take visiting ski enthusiasts to the top of Aspen Mountain from the downtown area. The longest ski run is three miles, and novices will enjoy the Buttermilk Ski Area, while advanced skiers can tackle the Snow Park Technologies terrain park. Local hotel options include the St. Regis Aspen, and the Hotel Jerome.
