The Ataturk Memorial is located on top of a ridge above the Tarakena Bay in Wellington, New Zealand. The memorial overlooks the Cook Strait and was chosen for the site of this historic monument because of the likeness of the area to the Gallipoli Peninsula.

The Gallipoli Peninsula was one of the main battle areas of the First World War. The Turkish people defended their rights and their nation. This brought heavy casualties on both side of the Australian and New Zealand Troops against the Turkish troops.

The beloved leader of the Turks in this campaign was Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. He was a statesman who fought for his country during the First World War and later on became the first president of the Republic of Turkey. During the Gallipoli Campaign, he led the Turkish troops in battle. As a sign of respect for that battle and lives lost, Australian and New Zealand officials made an agreement with the Turkish government in 1984 to build a monument in honor of ANZAC troops who died there. In return for this, the Turkish government asked that a monument of their beloved leader Kemal Ataturk be erected in Canberra, Australia as well as in Wellington, New Zealand.

The monument was unveiled in 1990 and was designed by Ian Bowman. The memorial is a landmark that depicts that sacrifices made by each nation in the battle for freedom.
