Founded to preserve materials "connected with the history and antiquities of America, and the useful arts, and generally to disseminate useful knowledge,” the Athenaeum of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, holds a collection that attracts thousands of visitors each year. Since 1814 this not-for-profit organization has been an invaluable resource for information on architecture and interior design. The building itself is listed as a National Historic Landmark, and is renowned for its Italianate Revival Style architecture as designed in 1845 by architect John Notman. In addition to its library the Athenaeum houses a museum collection of American fine and decorative arts, spanning the time period of 1800 to 1850. To tour the museum collection advanced reservations are required. The Athenaeum is open from Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm and first Saturdays from 10am-2pm. Keep in mind that in order to do research in the library it is necessary to make an appointment.
