Athens International Airport

Hotels near Athens International Airport, Athens, Greece .

Athens International Airport (ICAO: LGAV) is the civilian airport that serves the city of Athens and the region of Attica. It began operation in2001 and is the major hub and base for both Olympic Air and Aegean Airlines. The airport, serving more than 16 million travelers annually, has become increasingly popular as a gateway to Asia and the Middle East. Also, it is known its continuous investment in pioneering technology. It is Airbus A380 ready and is also equipped with two robotic systems ("Hercules" and "Ulysses") designed to protect the lives of individuals as well as airport spaces by safely identifying and removing explosives. The airport replaced the now-closed Athens (Ellinikon) International Airport. It is located between the towns of Markopoulo, Koropi, Spata and Loutsa, about 20 km (12 mi) east of central Athens. Because of the winding terrain, the road journey requires traveling a distance of 30 km (19 mi). The airport is named after Elefthérios Venizélos, a prominent Cretan political figure and former Prime Minister of Greece. Venizelox made outstanding contributions to the development of Greek aviation and to the Hellenic Air Force in the 1930s. Athens International Airport currently has two terminals, connected by a foot-tunnel. The airport is designed for a six-phase upgrade program in ensuing years in order to accommodate increases in air travel. The final phase will allow the airport to accommodate as many as 50 million passengers a year, a three-fold increase from current levels. In 2008, the airport handled 16.466.479 passengers. It is among Europe’s 30 busiest airports. In 2005 and 2006, the Airport received the Skytrax award for best airport in Southern Europe. The tri-level Main Terminal Building handles most Extra and Intra Schengen flights. The Satellite Terminal is used for Extra Schengen flights only By road, the airport is accessible by the Attiki Odos toll highway. The highway segment that leads directly to the airport is toll free and is accessible through Koropi and Markopoulo Mesogaias. Taxis are available. There is no price to and from the airport, although certain standard fees apply, in addition to the cost of tolls. A rail station immediately adjacent to the airport terminal (and accessible by an elevated walkway) was completed in time for the 2004 Olympics. The station is served by the Proastiakos suburban train service. The average travel time from the airport to the city centre is 45 minutes. Six bus lines (X92, X93, X94, X95, X96, X97) serving many parts of Athens, such as Piraeus and the terminal bus stations Kiffisos and Liosion are available. Buses run twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week at the lower terminal level. Athens International Airport boasts many services and facilities. These include: the Children's Creative Entertainment Centre (no-charge supervised play area), ATMs (Greek Alpha and Emporiki Banks), currency exchange outlets, WSW Skycap Services (baggage hauling and porter service), Secure Bag Protection (baggage wrapping service), massage chairs, a hair salon, travel agencies, baggage storage services, and a business center. Cars are available for hire from Avis, Budget Rent a Car, Europcar, Hertz, Alamo Rent A Car and Sixt. The airport hotel, Sofitel Athens Airport, is located adjacent to the Main Terminal outside the Extra/Intra Schengen Arrivals Hall. The 5-star hotel features 345 rooms, 13 suites, 2 restaurants, 2 bars, 24-hour room service, conference and meeting rooms, an indoor swimming pool, an indoor sauna and a fitness centre.
