Athlone castle is situated in the central part of Athlone which is apt according to geography and history. Athlone ford is very important and is an integral part because Shannon which is in south of the Athlone is impossible to pass till Clonmacnoise (which is a meeting place of Esker Riada and Shannon) and further Lough Ree is in the north.

Brian Boru in the year 1001 came from Kincora with his army in the town, to witness a crowd gathering sailing all the way across the river through Lough Derg.

Turloch Mór Ó Conor built a fort towards the west bank of the town in order to protect this. Many times the bridge and fort jointly experienced a number of attacks and Anglo-Normans had built a fortification over here at the close of 12th century. John Gray went ahead by building a stone structure in the year 1210.The donjon, which has twelve sides, was built in this year and is relatively very old. At the time of Siege of Athlone, a major part of this castle was damaged, which was then enlarged and rebuilt.

Shannon River flows through Athlone and this town has become a famous spot for the tourist or locales pass through such craft and some stop on the Marinas often.

Shannon's largest lake is Lough Ree and is just a small distance from Athlone towards the northern side of the town. This is a very famous spot among many birdwatchers, anglers and swimmers. Hodson Bay and Coosan Point are the points from where the lake shore can be visited easily. Lough Ree club is also in the town and promenade has its yacht clubhouse.
