The Athlone Golf Club was setup in 1892 making it one of the oldest clubs in the Ireland. It is a superb 18 hole parkland course located on the Lough Ree shores in the middle of the country and bordered on three sides by the Lough Ree.

Designed beautifully, it brings out the best in the natural surroundings providing golfers with the best of views from its vantage points as well as scenic views of the wooded islands and the lake from the clubhouse. Its undulating terrain and fairways lined with trees make for a true test of golf.

The Athlone Golf Club has been selected severaltimes to provincial as well as national championships. The prestigious All-Ireland Cups and Shields Finals were also held here in 1998.

While there, make sure you visit the Athlone Castle which was built in the beginning of the 13th century for King John of England on the edge of Shannon. The Athlone Castle has safeguarded the town for many centuries. The original medieval walls of the castle are still standing; there are also a couple of huge cannons from the reign of King George II.

Enjoy yourself on the Viking Tours which means going to Clonmacnois on a Viking replica ship that can hold 71 passengers. The 4.5 hour trip includes a stop at the monastic site. Just for fun, the crew will be dressed in Viking clothes for the journey and passengers too are encouraged to do the same with Viking clothes provided.

The Battle of Aughrim Interpretative Centre re-creates the Battle of Aughrim of 1691 with the help of a high-tech, 3D audiovisual presentation.
