Atwater Kent Museum

Hotels near Atwater Kent Museum, Philadelphia, United States .

With so much of the nation's history centering on Philadelphia, it's no wonder that walking down a street in Center City, it's possible to find a museum dedicated to the history of just about anything. One of the most popular museums, and also a registered historic place, Atwater Kent Museum has been Philly's city museum since the 1930s.

A. Atwater Kent was more than just one of the founders of the museum--e was also an inventor and one of the first people to work in radio in the city. Along with a couple of other people, including the mayor and the head of one of the city's most prestigious preservation societies, A. Atwater Kent purchased a building and started the museum.

Visitors who head to Atwater Kent Museum should expect an extensive look at the city's history, brought alive by almost 100,000 artifacts, pieces of art, and objects. The museum also has an extensive collection of Quaker furniture and other pieces.
The building that houses the museum was built in 1824.

Atwater Kent Museum is open Monday through Friday, from nine until five in the afternoon. Many of the city's popular hotels are just a short walk from the museum, including the Omni Hotel Independence Park, the Holiday Inn Philadelphia Historic District, and the Sheraton Society Hill Hotel.
