The Auckland CBD or the Central Business District, often referred to as CBD or Central City is the heart of the city, both economic and geographically. It is bounded by several major motorways and the harbour and surrounded further by other suburban areas.

The city’s size is 433 hectares similar to Sydney CBD, and twice as large as Wellington and Christchurch CBDs. A part of the district is located on a reclaimed land of Waitemata Harbour.

CBD also has significant educational institutions, aside from its more fame in recreation such as The University of Auckland and Auckland University of Technology as well as English language schools for foreigners.

With the increasing number of employment and residents in the district, Auckland CBD is a hub of transport both public and private. The Britomart Transport Centre is a venue for rail and buses, and nearby is the Auckland Ferry Terminal.

The district has a future strategy with vision and principles for its successful transformation. 2007 plan was made and currently, a 2008-2011 plan is being implemented. It aims for Auckland CBD to be one of the world’s premier business locations, a high quality urban environment, a popular destination, a world-class centre for education research and development, and a place that feels like the heart and express the soul of Auckland.
