The Auckland Civic Theatre is a large heritage theatre that can seat up to 2,378 people. It is located in Auckland CBD of New Zealand. It opened on the 20th of December 1929. After a major renovation and conservation, it opened in 2000.

The theatre is the largest surviving atmospheric cinema in Australia and one of the only seven of its kind in the world. It has an Indian-inspired foyer with seated Buddhas, twisted columns and domed ceilings, with the main auditorium designed like a Moorish garden.

The Auckland Civic Theatre was built for Thomas O’Brien in 1929, who created a movie empire in Auckland’s inner suburbs in the 1920s, by Bohringer, Taylor and Johnson. It also gained popularity being used for scenes at the remake of the movie “King Kong by Peter Jackson.

The theatre has a Main Auditorium for stage-and-movie shows as well as opera and musical performances, also a home to the yearly Auckland International Film Festival. A Winter Garden is below the Main Auditorium which was converted to a cinema in 1975 and later to a multi-purpose hall used for cocktail functions, dance parties, cabaret evenings, post-performance receptions, product launches and awards evening with 550 seats.
