Auckland Harbour Bridge is an eight-lane box truss motorway bridge over the Waitemata Harbour. It joins the Mary’s Bay and Northcote. It is a part of State Highway 1 and Auckland Northern Motorway and the second largest in New Zealand, longest in the North Island. It has a length of 3,348 ft with a main span of 243.8 meters rising 43.27 meters above high water.

It took the Dorman Long/Cleveland Bridge Co 4 years to build the bridge as the original contractors. It was completed on April 1959, three weeks ahead of schedule and officially opened on the 30th of May 1959 by the Governor-General Lord Cobham. On the day before the opening, 106,000 people where allowed to walk on the bridge. Auckland Harbour Bridge has an estimated capacity of 180,000 vehicles daily. It was originally built with four lanes but was later extended to eight to cope with the increasing number of vehicles using the bridge.

A “tidal flow” system is in place to accommodate traffic direction. During morning rush, five of the eight lanes are allocated to southbound traffic going to Auckland and in the afternoon, is reversed with lanes allocated to northbound traffic. On other times of the day, the lanes are split evenly.

The bridge does not only feature its use as a way to go about the city, but also as a spot for locals and tourists to enjoy. AJ Hackett Bungy offers an access to the bridge with a complete tour guide lasting 1 ½ hours and a fee starting $100. Another is the Auckland Bridge Highlights Climb lasting for an hour at $25 per person.
