Auckland Zoo, located in Western Springs Auckland, New Zealand, is the primary zoological garden in the city. It is located a short distance from Auckland’s main business districts making it a primed destinations for tourists and locals alike. The zoo is run by the Auckland City Council together with the Auckland Zoological Society. It boasts of housing over 170 species of animals with more than 1,300 animals in total.

The zoo was opened in 1922. Together with its own efforts as well as from several sizable donations, the zoo was able to increase its number of animals. Top exhibits found in the zoo today include the Animal Planet Elephant Clearing, the Aussie Walkabout, the Hippo River, the BNZ Kiwi and Tuatara House, the Native Frog Research Center, and the Just Juice Primate Trail.

The zoo is open from Mondays to Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Last suggested admission is at 4:30 p.m. The zoo closes its doors on Christmas day. During the winter months, from June to August, the zoo closes at 5 p.m.
