Audubon House and Tropical Gardens

Hotels near Audubon House and Tropical Gardens, Key West, United States .

Located at 205 Whitehead Street in Key West, Florida, the Audubon House and Tropical Gardens provides visitors with a unique way to look into the past of this tiny yet affluent island community and to discover the various plant species which make the local ecology so inviting and appealing. The property house, which was restored in 1958 and represents the first successful restoration project in Key West history, was originally built by Captain John G. Geiger, one of the master wreckers in Key West during the 1800s, and currently displays various furnishings that make it seem almost like an antiques store. It was here that famed ornithologist John James Audubon drew several of his first bird drawings for newly discovered species in the Americas during a tour in 1832.

Outside, the nearly acre of tropical gardens offer a tranquil and seductive environment filled with exotic species such as orchids and bromeliads, and a charming 1840s style nursery rounds out the offering, giving even more historical contextualization. Admissions cost $10 for adults and $5 for kids, and tours are available from 9:30am through 5pm daily. Visit the official website, at http://www.audubonhouse.com/, for more details.

There is absolutely no difficulty in finding nearby lodging options, as various resorts and hotels exist in the surroundings, such as the Hyatt-Sunset Harbor Resort and the Gardens Hotel.
