Augsburger Puppenkiste

The Augsburger Puppenkiste is a puppet theater located in Augsburg, Germany.

It lists performances of fairy tales and serious dramas since 1948. Since 1953 ) the Puppenkiste gained popularity nationwide with its numerous television productions (including pieces about Jim Knopf and Urmel). In 2004, the Augsburger Puppenkiste was awarded the Golden Camera.

Many classic fairy tales, not only of the brothers Grimm, but also from the Arabian Nights, or by Wilhelm Hauff, are played here. Pieces, such as Aladdin and the Magic Lamp, Zwergnase or Frau Holle have been restaged and standing on the program for decades.

The theater has also materials for adults. Differently as expected at a puppet theater, here are played adaptations of plays from the worldwide famous theatres. For the Mozart Year 2006 Klaus Marschall staged in 2005 the classic stuff of Don Giovanni as Don Giovanni and the Stone Guest. The play was a success and is played since then. A puppet’s museum can be found here, too, where all the famous puppets can be admired in their “natural environment”. Since opening, the museum became the most successful of its kind in Europe. Every month thousands of families from Augsburg and all provinces are coming to watch for two hours the permanent and special exhibitions.

The Augsburger Puppenkiste is at three kilometers from Augsburg’s centre, so it is easy accessible by walking. Public transport can be used to reach the theatre, too.
