Basel-Landschaft and Basel-Stadt were jointly formed till it was partitioned during the 1883 uprising which was the battle, near Frenkendorf, of Hülftenschanz.

The country relied on the city economically because of poor education facilities at that time in most of the agricultural areas.

Basel city is still the central economic and cultural part of both the cantons of Basel. In the Basel canton, political quarrels flared up after 1830. Some of the issues concerned with the people's right in agricultural areas. This quarrel ended with the separation of Basel-Landschaft and Basel city on August 26, 1833.
