Not your typical zoo, The Austin Zoo and Animal Sanctuary does more for animals than merely import them from exotic locales. This non-profit zoo rescues animals in need of help, and started as the dream of a local couple who were running Good Day Ranch, an animal rehabilitation center. Over the years, Good Day Ranch grew, changed, and eventually became The Austin Zoo, which sees thousands and thousands of visitors every year.

Unlike many other of the nation's zoos, The Austin Zoo and Animal Sanctuary has a main mission to help animals. The zoo currently houses over 300 animals, and is a popular destination for field trips from the local schools. While the zoo originally housed goats, deer, donkeys, ponies, and pigs, it's grown to become the home of creatures from most of the continents. A large number of the zoo's animals are from homes where an exotic pet just didn't work out the way that the family thought it would. Requests don't stop coming, either, with the zoo forced to turn down housing animals each month.

It's not all history at The Austin Zoo, though. Whether or not your child is interested in the educational aspects of caring for animals, a walk through and a chance to meet the animals is fun no matter what. The museum is open daily from ten in the morning until six at night, and there's a gift shop that closes each day at five. It's possible for locals to buy membership, giving unlimited visits to the zoo for a year as well as a discount at the guest shop. The zoo is just a short drive from most of the downtown hotels.
