Australian-American Memorial

Hotels near Australian-American Memorial, Canberra, Australia .

Located in Canberra, the capital of Australia, the Australian-American Memorial stands strong and bold as a reminder for locals and tourists alike of the participation of the United States during the Second World War.

The memorial is tall column that is octagonal in shape. It is hallow inside and it is made out of a steel framework that is covered with aluminum steel panels, which have been sandblasted so that the monument looks as if it is made out of stone. Two murals are situated at the base of the memorial, one is a map of the United States made out of copper, while the other one is a depiction of how the Americans fought the war in the Pacific. The memorial is then surrounded by a moat that is approximately 3 meters wide, and under the dedication plaque of the memorial is a wreath made of bronze as well. To top the column of the memorial, an American Eagle, created by Paul Beadle, sitting on a sphere has been placed making the memorial stand at approximately 258 feet (for the column) plus 11 meters (for the sphere and eagle combined).

Incidentally, there are two other memorials constructed in Adelaide and Brisbane.
