Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari is an auto racing circuit near Imola, Italy. It is situated at 40 kilometers east of Bologna and 80 kilometers east of Maranello, the Ferrari factory. The circuit is named after Ferrari's late founder Enzo and his son Dino who had died in the 1950s and before Enzo Ferrari's death in 1988 it was called 'Autodromo Dino Ferrari'. It is worldwide known as Imola cicuit and is renowned because of its anti-clokwise direction.
Regardless to the fact that it is situated in Italy, it was the venue for the Formula One San Marino Grand Prix as the Italian Grand Prix takes place in Monza. It is considered as the 'home circuit' of Ferrari and masses of tifosi (Ferrari supporters) come out to support the local team every time Formula 1 visits Imola.
Despite the addition of the chicanes, the circuit was subject to safety concerns. Most of these concerns regarded the flat-out Tamburello corner, which was very bumpy and had dangerously little room between the track and a concrete wall which protects a creek that runs behind it and created accidents. Many drivers lost control of their cars and were severely injured: Nelson Piquet, Gerhard Berger, Michele Alboreto, Rubens Barrichello and Roland Ratzenberger. The most horible accident took place in 1994 when the legendary 3-time World Champion Ayrton Senna went straight on at the Tamburello corner on Lap 7 and died.
In August 2006 FIA decided that Imola would not host the Grand Prix in the 2007, as the San Marino race was removed from the calendar. It followed a reconstruction work and in June 2008 FIA gave the track "1T" rating, meaning that official F1 test can be held there. But still the track hasn’t been omologated to host a Grand Prix.
