Avalon Airport, located in Avalon and 23 kilometers or 14 miles away from Geelong, is the second busiest of all four airports in Melbourne. It was designed to accommodate jet aircraft and has a single asphalt runway, which spans 10,000 feet in length. Aside from catering to scheduled commercial flights, Avalon Airport is also the venue of the Australian International Airshow, which is held biennially.

The Avalon Airport was opened in 1953 and each year an estimated 1.4 million passengers pass through. It was initially opened to cater military aircrafts. The first scheduled passenger flight to take off from Avalon took off on February 1995. It was operated by Hazelton Airlines and was heading to Sydney. Today, airlines that use Avalon Airport include Qantas, Qantas’ Jetstar, and Sharp Airlines. Flights from Avalon terminate in Brisbane, Portland, Adelaide, and Sydney.
