For those uninitiated people who aren't expecting one of the world's major cities upon arriving Buenos Aires, there's no denying that you're in a major metropolis if you find yourself in the city's downtown (microcentro) during rush hour. Because then you can witness one of the truly incredible sights in Buenos Aires: 16 lanes of traffic, all going at the same time.

Avenida 9 de Julio is the city's widest thoroughfare, and arguably the widest in the entire world. Named after Argentina's independence day, the street runs only a short way in downtown, but passes a number of the city's major attractions. The entire bustling area feels sort of like South America's answer to Times Square, with numerous large advertisements, flashing neon signs, and thousands and thousands of taxis in transit.

Rising above the hustle and bustle of the city is Te Obelisk, a tall monument that still causes controversy because of its towering stature and minimal design. Also on Avenida 9 de Julio is Teatro Colon, an architectural masterpiece where many important operas, ballets, and concerts have taken place. Rounding out important Buenos Aires landmarks on Avenida 9 de Julio are The French Embassy, a building so beautiful that the country refused to have it moved or demolished, and a statue of Don Quixote.
