Lisbon is home to many historical monuments including the Avenida da Liberdade. This is also known as Liberty Avenue and comprises of a 90m wide boulevard which s divided by pavements into ten lanes. It is a link between Restauradores Square and Marquis of Pombal Square. An architect called Reinaldo Manuel inaugurated the Liberty Avenue in 1764. This boulevard were covered by high walls initially and was rebuilt in the 1830's by Malaquias Ferreira. There are allegoric statues in the boulevard that represent the Douro and the Tagus river. The new design had new installation of flora with new fountains and statues. It also has a few waterfalls embedded in the area. The avenue was rebuilt again in the early 1880's on the model of Parisian boulevards. It became a prime destination for the people of the higher strata of the society. Maximiano Alves and Rebelo de Andrade inaugurated the largest monument which fell during the second World War. Most of the original monuments have been replaced with new offices and hotels. Statues of leaders like Alexandre Herculano, Almeida Garrett and others, flank the sidewalks along with the Portuguese pavement. The place is full of scenic beauty and shops, hotels, theatres and other tourist attractions. The hotels are economical for travellers and provide all the basic amenities that one requires during a leisure or a weekend trip. All in all, a great place to visit with the family.
