Named after its owner Sir Henry Ayers, the colonial Ayers House Museum is located at North Terrace, Adelaide in South Australia. Sir Henry Ayers was one of the most influential businessmen and politicians of the nineteenth century. He leased the house from the house builder named William Paxton in 1855 and renovated it to include ornate painted finishes on the walls and ceilings.

The house started from a simple nine-room brick house to one of the most famous houses of that time with elaborate features. The house was constructed in such a way that a distinction between family and servants was strictly enforced. Eventually, the house became a frequent venue for grand parties and balls which were held for the local gentry.

Ayers House is split into three main areas. The Ground Floor features the State Dining Room, the designs of which are thought to have been painted by Charles Gow, dating back in the 1870s. The next area is called the Lower Ground or basement, where visitors are going to enjoy being in the newly refurnished underground Summer Sitting Room with newly restored ceilings. The First Floor is the last area in the guided tour and features the bedrooms and nursery.

The museum welcomes all visitors and is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays to Fridays and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. during public holidays and weekends. The museum is closed every Monday, on Good Friday and on Christmas Day. Admission fee for adults is $8 and $4 dollars for children. Special rates are given for senior citizens, students and group tours.
