AZCA, the acronym for Asociación Mixta de Compensación de la Manzana A de la Zona Comercial de la Avenida del Generalísimo, is an avenue in Madrid, Spain. The office block located between the streets Raimundo Fernández Villaverde, Orense, General Perón and Paseo de la Castellana houses one of the most important business centers and major offices in Spain.
The original concept dates from the General Urban Plan of Madrid (called Bigador Plan), that was adopted in 1946. The purpose of this plan was to build a huge office block with separated tracks between the road traffic and the pedestrian circulation, with a railway station: Nuevos Ministerios. This plan presumed building a new cultural facilities opera house, a library and a botanical garden that were never built. At the time of the project, AZCA complex was in the outskirts of the city. The architect that won the project was Antonio Pepina. He followed the model of the Rockefeller Center in New York. Despite the first approval for the plan in 1957, the draft went through several reforms and a final approval was not granted until 1964 by the Committee on Planning and Coordination Madrid metropolitan area (the name by which they designated the General Urban Police Station since 1963). So the construction began no sooner than 1970.
Nowadays there are many imposing skyscrapers placed there. These one are only the most important: Torre Picasso (157 m), Torre Europa (121 m), Banco de Bilbao (107 m), Torre Mahou (85 m) and Banco Santander Tower.
In 2007, in the area, farther along the Castellana, a new skyscraper area was raised.
