The home of the city of Rio de Janeiro, Baia de Guanabara is the second largest oceanic bay in Brazil. Rio itself lies at the western shore of the bay, with four other municipalities surrounding the remaining shoreline. The Guanabara Bay is 19 miles long and 17 miles wide at its widest point, and includes over 130 islands, chief amongst them Governador Island, which houses the Galeao – Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport.

With the Port of Rio de Janeiro housed in the middle of the Baia de Guanabara, the bay is an important and heavily trafficked waterway. Additionally, the vast majority of air traffic in and out of Rio is directed through Jobim International Airport, and the Rio – Niteroi Bridge, which crosses the bay, is a congested motorway, meaning that the bay is a virtual transportation hub for the city of Rio. As a result of the heavy traffic, the bay’s ecosystem has suffered extensive damage, prompting the Brazilian government to undertake conservation efforts directed at reviving the health of the bay.
