The Baldeneysee Lake (www.baldeneysee.de), Essen, Germany, is really a widening in the River Ruhr, which was excavated from the river bed by miners from the nearby coal mine in the 1800s. The Lake, situated just over four miles outside Essen, has been a tourist attraction since the 1930s and now offers many outdoor activities, such as: fishing, yachting, yacht-school, canoeing and rowing. There is a museum train, formerly the old coal mine train, restored by conservationists, which takes visitors on tours around the lake and its original industries. Visitors may also book boat trips on the White Fleet Boats that are also available for hire, or enjoy a meal at the two lakeside restaurants. The lake is accessible via the A40 and A52 highways, and via the network of railway stations that serve Essen and nearby Dusseldorf. The nearest airport is Essen Mulheim, five miles away.

Essen is a city in the Rhine-Westphalia region of Germany, made prosperous by its coal and steel industries. Attractions include historic town buildings, theatres, museums and the Essen Cathedral that holds the oldest known statue of the Madonna, the Golden Madonna, dating back to 980AD.
